Germany Proposes European Production of Patriot Interceptors
Speaking after a meeting of the Bundestag defense committee, Pistorius said he presented the proposal to US officials during a visit to Washington the previous week and also discussed it with Raytheon, a major US defense contractor.
“We made clear that we want to help meet the enormous demand that has emerged for this and other American systems by building production lines in Europe and in Germany,” he said.
Pistorius said the proposal covers specific Patriot missile variants when asked which systems Germany wants to manufacture. “It is about PAC-3, it is about PAC-2 GEM-T, and theoretically it can also be about Patriot systems. But that is a decision we cannot make. We have made the offer.”
He explained that establishing a production facility in Germany or elsewhere in Europe would require authorization from the US.
“Ultimately, it is an intellectual property issue. It also depends on whether the Pentagon and the White House, as well as the company, are willing to proceed. That is what is being examined now, and we are hoping for good solutions.”
