Germany’s Merz Stresses Climate Policy as Key to Security, Prosperity

(MENAFN) Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reiterated his country’s commitment to climate targets, arguing that environmental policy is closely tied to international security, peace, and long-term prosperity.

Speaking at the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin, Merz stated that “Climate policy is also a policy for global security and global prosperity,” warning that rising global temperatures are worsening existing conflicts and could contribute to the emergence of new ones, according to reports.

He also voiced confidence ahead of the upcoming COP31 UN climate conference set to take place in Antalya, Türkiye in the autumn, saying Germany intends to remain a “reliable partner” in global climate cooperation.

Merz emphasized that Germany remains firmly committed to the Paris Agreement and its own climate objectives, stressing that innovation and technological development are central to the country’s strategy.

He added that climate action requires close coordination with industry and cautioned against policies that could undermine the country’s industrial sector. He warned that approaches leading to deindustrialization would likely face public resistance and could ultimately slow innovation and economic progress, according to reports.

The chancellor underlined that climate protection must be pursued in a way that preserves Germany’s manufacturing base while still advancing environmental goals.
