AfD Lawmaker Dismisses Russian Threat to Germany
Markus Frohnmaier, who leads the right-leaning AfD in the Bundestag, also rejected claims that his party operates on behalf of Moscow.
The AfD has consistently opposed military support for Ukraine and contended that Berlin should prioritize diplomatic measures instead.
“I stand for German interests,” Frohnmaier stated on Tuesday during a televised discussion with Norbert Roettgen of the governing Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
He emphasized that Germany should avoid “getting involved in a foreign war” and noted it has no duty to protect Ukraine, a nation that is not part of NATO.
When questioned about Russia’s threat to Germany, Frohnmaier responded, “We are not at war with Russia.”
He further explained, “The AfD’s position is to remain in dialogue with all global, relevant actors,” while criticizing the administration for what he described as a “hyper-moralizing” approach to foreign affairs.
Roettgen, however, argued that Moscow is conducting a “hybrid war” targeting Germany and other European countries, accusing Frohnmaier of echoing Russian propaganda.
Last week, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier labeled Russia a danger to national security.
In related developments, Germany recently unveiled plans to raise financial support to Kiev by €3 billion ($3.5 billion) next year.
According to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Berlin also delivered additional US-made Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine last month.
