Germany Witnesses Drop in Import Prices

(MENAFN) Germany experienced a 1.7 percent annual decline in import costs in April, according to data published by the country’s Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, on Wednesday.

This downward shift highlights continuing changes in trade-related pricing trends over the past year.

Conversely, export prices rose by 1 percent compared to April of the previous year, Destatis reported.

This indicates a moderate increase in the prices of goods sent abroad.

A substantial factor in the drop in import prices was the sharp fall in energy costs, which were 11.2 percent lower than in April 2024.

This sector had the most significant effect on the overall reduction in the cost of imported items.

The import costs of intermediate products also saw a slight reduction, with a 0.1 percent decrease over the same timeframe.

On the other hand, the price of imported consumer items continued to rise, marking a 2.6 percent increase compared to a year earlier.

This suggests that consumers are still facing elevated prices for foreign-produced goods.

Regarding exports, Destatis noted, "In the case of exports, the increase in the prices of consumer and capital goods had the biggest influence on the development of prices in April 2025."

This points to higher values in key categories driving the overall increase in exported product prices.
